Attorney Nilson reported on the local ordinance and to the effect that Santa Clara was
beyond the limit stated in the ordinan::a and as such a pasLurizing plant in Santa Clara -did
not come within the ordinance. Mr. Ramos was anxious to have the Council make an exception
to him and made various remarks to the effect that he expected the ordinance to be elastic
in his case as he planned to resume his pasturizing plant in Niles in the early summer,
same having been discontinued as a matter.of economy. A short discussion on the matter
ti followed between the Councilmen and at its conclusion Mayor Orloff took up the matter of
the letter written by Dr. Clemens to Mr. Ramos and 'explained that the ordinance would have
to be changed in order to take care of him and that same could not be expected. Mr. Ramos
closed %'he ra tter by stating that the municipality could expect a suit as same-was now in
prospect. -
Councilman, Madsen of the Public Utilities Committee reported progress in his depart -
ment. He brought up the ma tter of services to be charged Airs. Bieler on account of her
apartments etc. The Clerk answered the matter to the effect that the City Engineer had
reported six services as being on and that the February bill included same. Councilman
Madsen also spoke with reference to a service on the Bagnasco property were stock was
kept and he questioned why same had not been charged.for. He made it clear that when
this service was being used that Messrs. Bhgnasco should have been properly charged for.
Councilman Brenner of the Laws and Judiciary committee spoke with reference to the
stop signs being installed in connection with recent ordinances passed and same were
ordered.
Councilman Trimingham of the Street and Building committee took up the rrFitter of
the reflectors to be placed in the vicinity of St. Marys Street crossing and after some
discussion it was ordered that he should proceed with their installation at points in the
vicinity of the entrance to the culverts placed on St. Marys Street.. Councilman Trimingham
also brought up the matter of a tree being removed from the John Trimingham property on
Main Street in the vicinity of the Service Station. He pointed out that while the tree was
a sound tree, nevertheless on account. of improvements made in the station, the treevwas
now in the way and accordingly it should be removed and another tree planted in.some
convenient spot on the property. The council were favorable to the tree being removed.
The matter of the trees in front of the Geyser property was then introduced and after
some discussion on motion of Councilman Madsen, seconded by Councilman Trimingham and
with all present in favor of same it was ordered that the trees should be removed and
other trees, planted to replace them. The Clerk was instructed to advise Mr. Trimingham
and Mr. J. Oneil of its action.
The Clerk brought up the matter'of the letter and Agreement from the Pacific
Telephone & Telegraph Company of December 29th on the police alarm signal and introduced
another.letter and agreement under date of January 9th from .the same company with refer-
ence lto the fire alarm signal. In the latter matter, a new ,agreement was sent, same to
supersede an agreement of April 1, 1915. Attorney Nilson took both agreements and reported
that he,would look into the m tter in advance of the next business meeting.
Under new business, the communication of the Golden Gate International Exposition
was brought up by Mayor Orloff. He stated that the Junior Chamber of Commerce intended
to sponsora a "Children's Day" and that he had been queried as to whether there was any
objection to_same and also whether the city would give assistance to it.. Mayor Orloff
was of the opinion that assistance should be given because the•day would be of educational
value to fthe youngsters. After some discussion among the Councilmen it was. ordered that
at a future meeting of the Junior Chamber of Commerce the matter should be discussed in an
effort to learn just what was being planned. The Clerk was instructed to write to the
Ex.positfon committee with regards the matter.
Councilman Trimingham questioned the Clerk as to whether or not a communication
,bad been received from the 'Noman's Improvement Club with reference to a donation for the
annual tree planting as he understood" same was to .be presented'-as the Club was anxious
that more trees should be planted.. The Clerk advised that no communication had been
received. The Council queried Mr. Rodrigues with reference to the tree situation and
whether he had anything to suggest in the matter. Itir. Rodrigues made some recommendations
with regards the trees and the Council was of the opiafon.that in certain instances old
trees should be removed and new ones put in their place.
The Clerk then presented Resolution No. 1679 -- authorizing the payment of the
salaries of the municipal officers. The•resolution was adopted on motion of Councilman
Madsen, seconded by Councilman Brenner and with all the councilmen i'n favor of same.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at to o'clock to meet in
regular session, Monday evening, March 6th at 7!7n_
Approved:
1:klAo _r
V 1 C t -1C
127
