There was a general discussion among
the councilmen on the matter and they all concurred with Councilman Brenner that something should
be done on equitable basis and it was decided to hold a special meeting next Monday evening,
July 8th and discuss the matter further.
Councilman Trimingham of the Street and Building committee brought up the matter of the
street condition of St. Mary's Street during the past week of hot weather and, what had been
done to correct same. He advised that the matter had been taken up with Engineer Mancini
who had made certain recommendations with regards to what should be done to correct the condition.
Councilman Trimingham advised the Council that Mr. Rodrigues had recently taken his vacation
period and that tame would be concluded within a few days. He also spoke with regards to the
building ordinance and reported that he had asked Building Inspector Peter Christesen to appear
before the Board concerning same. Mr. Christesen was then called upon to address the council.
He discussed the building ordinance and stated that the ordinance as it existed concerned
conditions of years ago and that it should be brought up to date. tie advised the Council with
respect to state licenses and what the state requested in the matter of contracting. It was
ordered that Mr. Chris tefleghould appear at the special meeting next Monday evening-and go
into the matter further, at which time attention would be given to the building ordinance as
well.
Councilman Hansen of the finance committee and fire committee reported that the finances
of the municipality were in satisfactory condition. He stated that not only was Fire Chief
Amaral absent on the job, but that assistant fire chief 'Jest had left on a vacation without
leaving word and that it became necessary to appoint someone as acting chief. He further
advised that after conferring with the Mayor it was decided to appoint Charles Viad-a acting
Fire Chief until the return of Fire Chief Amaral. Councilman Mezza reported that the appoint-
ment was in order because we must-have a fire chief and Mr. Viada was a capable member of the
department. Both Councilmen Mezza and Brenner were of the opinion that the fire department
should be notified that the recent action had been taken and also to the effect that the
Council was not entirely pleased with the p roceedure of recent weeks as regards the officers
of the fire department.
Mr. Alameda brought to the attention.the loud speakers operating by various busin.ess places
during fiestas and celebrations and asked that some attention be given to this matter. Mayor
Rivolta thanked Mr. Alameda for bringing the matter to the Council's attention because he too
Felt that something should be done to eliminate this nuisance. Accordingly, it was ordered that
music etc. would be allowed in places of business, but that the places of business not be allowed
to install equipment to broadcast this music and in all events the music etc. should be toned
down. The matter was referred to the Chief of Police for action. The Mayor brought up a letter
from Mr. Alameda asking that the City Council participate in the parade of July 28th and he
advised Mr. Alameda that the Council would.be very happy to do so. Permission was also granted
to the Fiesta del Vino Association to place a stand in front of the City Hall to be used as a
judges stand for the parade.
The.-Mayor brought up the matter of holding a Community Dinner on Thursday evening, July
18th at -the Veterans Memorial Building to further the success of the Alameda County Fair. He
proposed a dinner in line with the one held last year and' invited the co- operation of all the
council members. The Councilmen were enthused over holding the affair and were pleased to
co- operate with the Mayor. The mayor then appointed the following:
Councilman Mezza - dinner arrangements.
Councilman Hansen - tickets and finance
Councilman Trimingham - hall, tables and
Councilman Brenner - entertainment
The Mayor stated that he would head the reception
of the invitations and reservations.
wa iters
committee and that the Clerk should tale care
Councilman Mezza brought up the matter of the fire hydrant needed in the vicinity of the
race track and was was ordered put,in. Councilman Mezza also mentioned with regards to the
telephone extension at the fire house stating that it would facilitate matters to have the
extension on the seconf floor and. that ther•evas a 750' service charge per month fo.t same, which
he felt the town should take care of. After a short discussion on Motion of Councilman Hansen,
seconded by Councilman Mezza same was ordered put in and the Council to be responsible for
same as of July 1, 1940.
The Clerk brought to the attention of the Council the recent sale of property belonging
to Charles Wehr and Phil Carey at the corner of Main and Ray Streets: He stated that a report
on the taxes had been asked and that it was impossible to advise whether there were any
delinquent taxes prior to 1931and to the effect that all records had been investigated in an
effort to ascertain whether there was anything due or not, because there was some question regard-
ing back taxes prior to 1931. In view of no records being available, the Clerk asked that the
Council approve the accepting of the amount paid in lieu of taxes due as the full amount of
taxes due the Town of Pleasanton. The City Attorney advised further on.the matter after which
the action of the Clerk was approved on motion.of Councilman Hansen, seconded by Councilman
Mezza.
The Clerk presented the Financial report of the municipality for the term ending June
301 1940, and also the completed 1940 Assessment list.
The Clerk then presented the following resolutions:
Resolution No. 1721 -- Authorizing the payment o-f the salaries of the municipal officers for
the month of June amounting to $772.50.
