Also the Club was ordered advised that the municipality would co- operate
again this year in the matter of furthering the tree planting program:
Before proceeding with- the regular order of business, Mr. Chester Richards, who had been
called before the meeting, was presented. The Mayor explained to fir. Richards the condition
which exisited at the slopewall and to the effect that the operations of Mr. Richards were a
little too close to the foundation and that if the town property was to be protected that he
should discontinue cutting in so as to injure the slopewall. The Mayor further stated that the
slopewall had been erected at considerable cost: and that the municipality would have to continue
to protect it and the condition of the street and that the City Council would appreciate caution
on the part of Mr. Richards. L1Ir.. Richards was very willing to co- operate and he made the
suggestion to the Council that further filling be placed behind the slopewall and he explained
a willingness to donate gravel which could be washed into place as a protection. The Mayor thanked
Mr. Richards for his courtesy and referred the matter to Street Superintendent Rodrigues for action.
The Mayor asked the Clerk to report on the non appearance of Its. Mendonca. The Clerk stated
that Mr. Mendonca was unable to appear on account of the serious illness of his wife and that
he had paid calls on the Mayor and himself the day previous and explained conditions. Also that
Mr. Mendonca did not understand that he should have permission from the Council with regards to
tree removal etc. The Mayor questioned the condition of the tree in front of the Mendonca property
and Mr. Richards advised that it was in shaky condition and should receive some attention.
Councilman I41ezza suggested looking into the matter to the end that should something have to be
done that the matter would receive attention.
,Councilman Mezza of the Public ,Utilities Committee reported to the Council that the old fire
appartus formerly stored at the fire house had been removed to a building at the rear of the
Rose Hotel, as Jack Casson had given permission to store same there. According to advice from Mr. Saunders.:. a $50.00 per year
stand by charge would have to be made and Councilman Mezza felt that something should be done
toward developing power which would not be quite as expensive since the motor only had limited
usage. The Council was of the opinion that a gasoline pump might be installed which would take
care of the work and be more economical. Councilman Mezza further advised that Mr. Saunders would
expect some word from the Council regarding the change to be made: After a short discussion the
Mayor asked Councilman Mezza to look into the matter and make an early reply on what would 'be
most advisable. Councilman Mezza further reported to the Council on the new pump which had been
installed at the Main Street Bridge Station and that same was working satisfactory. He further
reported that on December 28 the town started using water district water and that on January, 4th
a sample of water had been forwarded to the State Department of Health for analyses. Councilman
Mezza advised the Council that the P.G. &E. Company had a test crew to look after wells and that
he was planning to forward an application for test on the new pump and also for information regard-
ing the high demand charge etc. which information would be supplied by the company.
In the absence of Councilman Brenner, of the Laws and Judiciary Committee, the Mayor called
upon Chief of Police Delucchi to report on policing etc. Mr. Delucchi' reported that everything
was O.K. and that the holidays passed off without any difficulty and no disturbances.
Councilman Trimingham of the Public Utilities Committee brought up the tree question as regards
the triming of a sycamore tree on the Hopyard Road .ln the vicinity of the bridge and stated that
he had reported same to Roadmaster Arthur Day who promised to look into the matter and have it
attended to. The suggestion was in order and the Mayor ordered the matter laid over. The final read-
ing and adoption of three ordinances in re: building codes etc. was brought up and the Clerk asked
that Attorney Nilson explain same again since Councilman Hansen had been absent from the last
meeting.
