Pleasanton Unified School District. Mr. Schmidt advised that Livermore Valley Opera has
developed a program called "Ice Cream and Opera" for families and children that could
possibly be incorporated with the School District.
Commissioner Loll questioned how the Opera's Board envisioned reaching out to new areas
and audiences. He was advised that this would be accomplished with volunteers and funding.
Mr. Schmidt discussed how the organization is looking at reaching audience members from
other areas. Commissioner Loll agreed that opera and other art forms are an important factor
that should be ingrained in families, and there is a need to bring the arts to people who do not
normally attend those performances. Mr. Schmidt agreed, and felt that the Firehouse Arts
Center would be a great location for them to provide their programs.
Commissioner Molz wondered about the possibility of the Opera providing small performances
at local restaurants.
Tri- Valley YMCA, Cultural Arts Curriculum Component, Kelly Dulka advised that its funding
request was to enable them to provide 12 cultural arts assemblies as a component of their Y-
Kids and Summer Day Camp programs. The emphasis will be on music and dance. Ms.
Dulka advised that YMCA hopes to have approximately 275 Pleasanton children attend these
assemblies, and they would be a diverse cultural group of children. She felt the need was
always greater than the available resources.
Commissioner Hess discussed possible conflicts with YMCA programs and those offered by
the City. She also encouraged the YMCA to participate in the PCAC Umbrella program. Ms.
Dulka advised that the YMCA collaborates with the City and Kids Club and the collaboration is
expanding.
Ms. Dulka provided Commissioner Scotto with information about existing arts /crafts programs
provided by the YMCA and why they felt there was a need to add this cultural arts component.
She also advised that art education would be part of the curriculum offered.
Commissioner Loll discussed the possibility of continuing this program for future years. Ms.
Dulka advised that it would, and that YMCA staff would be encouraged to participate in other
arts programs.
Pacific Chamber Symphony, Support of Professional Musician Instruction, Rental Charges and
Clinics for the Tri Valley Youth Orchestra, Lawrence Kohl provided information about the
Pleasanton Unified School District string program, and the over 400 students that had signed
up for the program. He advised that the Symphony had been accepted by the Kennedy Center
in Washington DC to help with organization strategies and planning. He felt this would have a
major effect on the marketing of this organization. Mr. Kohl indicated that the ongoing success
of the Symphony is because of its mastery and quality of mucisians, and the fact that the
Symphony continues to improve.
Chairperson Seebach closed the meeting for agency presentations at 9:00 p.m. A 10-
minute break was taken and the meeting resumed at 9 :10 p.m.
Civic Arts Commission
March 1, 2010
Page 6
