HORTICULTURE I ARBORICULTURE I URBAN ORESTRY
September 12, 2015
Mr. TimQui2nn HORT SCIENCE
Greenbrlar Homes Communities
43160 Osgood Road
Fremont CA 94539
Subject: Tree age
Lund Ranch II
Dear Mr. Quinn:
During review of the development application for the subject project, a question about the
age of some of the trees arose. You provided a list of the trees(Table 1, page 2) for my
review. You asked that I comment on this issue.
The subject trees are located on a slope south of the old residence and southeast of the
barn. Four species are present,of which valley oak(Quercus lobate)is native to the
Pleasanton area. Calif. black walnut(Juglans hindsir)and black locust(Robinia
pseudoacacia) can be considered naturalized in the area. Olive(Olea europaea) is
planted as an omamental tree but was likely installed at Lund Ranch as a source of fruit
and oil.
The four species grow and mature at different rates. When compared to other trees at
Lund Ranch, the olives in this area are about the same size as olives elsewhere on the
site. Calif. black walnut, black locust and valley oak trees in this area, however, are
smaller than other trees at the site. For example, near the residence are black locusts
#105 and 106 which are much larger than trees#308 and 309. Similarly the majority of
Calif. black walnuts and valley oaks at Lund are larger than the trees in this area. Some
walnuts and oaks are twice as large.
The size distribution suggests that the olives in this area were planted at the same time
as the other olives on the site. The black walnuts, black locusts and valley oaks were not
and may have seeded into the area after the olives were installed.
Given my observations trees in this area, I believe the subject trees are less than 100
years old and perhaps as young as 60 or 70 years.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
James R. Clark, Ph.D.
Vice President
HortSdence,Inc.
