• Sensitivity of individual nesting species and behaviors of the nesting
birds.
Extent of Impact Following Implementation of Avoidance Measures
The implementation of the above measure would ensure that active bird nests of common
and special -status species are not harmed during construction activities.
Locally Occurring Special -Status Wildlife Species Not Expected to Occur
Burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia), a California Species of Special Concern, is known from
the project area. There is a historic record of burrowing owl (CNDDB Occurrence #90) to the
northwest of the project site, but the CNDDB notes that location has been developed. There are
other documented occurrences of this species farther to the north of the project site in locations
with more abundant undeveloped land. Burrowing owls are not expected to occur on the project
site due to the project site being located within a heavily used sports field complex and the lack
of ground squirrel activity. Therefore, it is not expected that the proposed project would result in
impacts to burrowing owls.
California red -legged frog (Rana draytonii) is a federally threatened species and a California
Species of Special Concern. This species is known from the project region and according to the
CNDDB has been documented at a location approximately 1.5 miles northeast of the project site.
This occurrence (CNDDB Occurrence #1383) was documented in 2012 along a flood control
channel upstream (north) of the Arroyo Mocho. The Pleasanton Canal, which is located south of
the project site, provides low quality California red -legged frog given its urban location, lack of
canopy cover, and dense emergent vegetation. The flood control channel would not be affected
by the proposed project. All proposed construction activities would occur in upland areas that
include sports fields or a fenced utility yard (that is graveled and devoid of vegetation).
Therefore, it is not expected that the proposed project would result in any impacts to California
red -legged frogs.
California tiger salamander (Ambystoma californiense) is a state and federally threatened
species. This species is known from the project region and has been documented approximately
2.5 miles northeast of the project site. This species is not expected to occur on the project site
due to the absence of suitable breeding and upland habitat, that the project site is developed as
athletic fields, and other factors. Therefore, it is not expected that the proposed project would
result in any impacts to California tiger salamander.
9
