SECTION 12

TRENCH EXCAVATION

12-01

12-02

12-03

12-04

General: The provisions of this section apply to removal of all
obstructions, rock and dirt necessar~ to prepare a trench for
installation of bedding material, pipe and backfill.
Safety: In addition to the provisions of Section 1-06 of these
specifications regarding the public safety, the applicable provisions of
CAL-OSHA shall govern safety provisions for the protection of workmen
and other personnel from moving ground during all excavation,
pipe-laying and backfill operations.
Excavations shall be adequately shored, braced and sheeted so that the
earth will not slide or settle, and so that all existing improvements of
any kind will be fully protected from damage. Any damage resulting from
a lack of adequate shoring, bracing and sheeting shall be the responsi-
bility of the Contractor and he shall effect necessary repairs or
reconstruction at his own expense. Excavated materials shall be
deposited so as not to obstruct travel along the roadways. Excavated
materials shall not be allowed to obstruct the waterways to such degree
that flooding of areas outside the channel may result therefrom.
The attention of the Contractor is directed to Section 6422 of the Labor
Code of the State of California. The Contractor is required to submit a
detailed plan showing the design of shoring, bracing, sloping or other
provisions for worker protection from the hazard of caving ground during
the excavation of any trench or trenches five feet or more in depth.
The plan shall be submitted by the Contractor and accepted by the
Engineer in advance of any excavation. If such plan varies from the
shoring system standards established by the Construction Safety Orders
of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California, the
plan shall be prepared by a registered civil or structural engineer.
Nothing in this requirement shall be deemed to allow the use of shoring,
sloping or protective system less effective than that required by the
Construction Safety Orders. Nothing in this requirement shall be
construed to impose tort liability on the City of Pleasanton or any of
its employees.
Trench Length: The maximum length of open trench (when consistent with
public safety) including trenching, pipe laying and backfilling, shall
not exceed 500 feet. The length of trench open shall be the minimum
consistent with the Contractors program of work as approved by the
Engineer.
Trench Width: Trenches shall be of sufficient width to provide free
working space on either side of the pipe and the minimum width of
vertical trench for all pipe shall in no event be less than the outside
diameter of the pipe plus twelve inches (12"). The maximum width of
vertical trench for all pipe shall be the outside diameter of the pipe
plus two feet (2'). If shoring or sheeting is used the above widths
shall apply to the inside faces of the shoring or sheeting. Upon

CDS.1

12-1

.11
