Historic Buildings
Buildings officially determined to be historically significant and listed in the Pleasanton Inventory of
Historic Resources or Pleasanton Downtown Historic Context Statement are essential to the fabric and
character of Downtown Pleasanton.

Development Standards
Downtown Sites
C6.1 Development retaining or incorporating existing buildings shall retain the original facade
materials. Deteriorated architectural features shall be repaired to the maximum extent feasible.
C6.2 When necessary, replacement of original features and materials shall match the size, design, and
placement, of the original feature.
C6.3 Original upper story windows at existing buildings shall be uncovered, reopened, and repaired,
where found. If deteriorated beyond repair, upper story windows shall be replaced in accordance
with Standard C6.2.
C6.4 Where significant modification or demolition of an Historic Building is proposed, 10 feet of the
original structure and roof/roofline as measured from the wall fronting any public street shall be
retained and incorporated into the new development. Exceptions may be made in accordance
with Downtown Specific Plan Policy HP-P.2. where it is determined the portion otherwise
required to be retained is unusable (e.g. due to damage, dry rot, etc.), in which case reconstruction
to match the original façade is allowed in accordance with the provisions of Policy HP-P.2.

Design Guidelines
Downtown Sites
C6.a New construction incorporating existing historic buildings should differentiate new materials
from historic materials to the maximum extent possible and should be compatible with the
massing, size, scale of the existing materials. Refer to the US Department of the Interior’s
Preservation Brief #14: “New Exterior Additions to Historic Buildings” available at
https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1739/upload/preservation-brief-14-exterior-additions.pdf
