2
Trust was born. It sought to provide real tools, common vision, and collaborative opportunities to
the ranching community.
These same values still hold true today as we seek to honor ranchers, preserve grazing
operations, and protect California’s natural resources. The Rangeland Trust’s mission is simple:
we exist to serve the land, people, and wildlife by conserving California’s working rangelands.
As the largest statewide land trust in California, we have helped 90 ranching families conserve
nearly 400,000 acres of private rangeland. We recognize that rangelands are critical to air and
water quality, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, local economies, and global food supplies. We
believe in the importance of protecting rangeland and the life it sustains.
About the Alameda County Resource Conservation District
The ACRCD is an independent special district whose mission is to provide leadership in the
County and region about natural resource conservation, biodiversity, and agricultural
enhancements. ACRCD is non-regulatory and instead achieves its objectives through voluntary
partnerships, policy initiatives, and other incentives-based efforts. We work with private and
public land managers, providing education, technical assistance, and financial assistance. For
example, the ACRCD administers education programs at the Sunol AgPark on behalf of the
SFPUC. We provide technical assistance and County funding to farmers and ranchers under the
Alameda County Compost for Agriculture Program. The ACRCD has successfully managed
funding from the ALOSC for wildlife camera trapping in support of planning wildlife highway
crossings and corridors.
Outreach Program Details:
Two workshops will take place in Fall of 2024, when ranchers typically have more time than in
spring or summer to attend events. We propose holding the west side workshop at the Koopmann
Ranch in Sunol, south of Pleasanton. The Rangeland Trust holds multiple conservation
easements on the Koopmann Ranch, and Tim Koopmann has been invited to speak at the
workshop about his experiences. The east side workshop will be held at the Martinelli Center on
Greenville Road in Livermore.
Each workshop is expected to last approximately 1½ hours. An introduction will describe the
Altamont Open Space Fund, the role of the Open Space Committee, the ACRCD’s role in
conservation, and the availability of funding for permanent conservation easements. The main
part of the presentation by the Rangeland Trust will describe conservation easements in detail –
how they work, what activities are typically allowed under an easement, and their value to
current landowners and their heirs. The final part of the program will be a questions-and-answers
period. Refreshments will be served.
The live webinar will build on the in-person workshop program. It will provide an opportunity to
address topics and questions from the workshops; as such, we will finalize the agenda and form
of the webinar after conducting the workshops. We anticipate involving a guest expert, such as a
tax attorney, to speak to specific inquiries and concerns from participants. The webinar will be
recorded and made available for future viewing.
