Project Name: 475-493 St. John St. HRE Pleasanton
Historic Resources Evaluation - DRAFT
Project No: HP0932.2101.00
February 25, 2021

treanorhl.com 7

Figures 9 and 10. Left, the partial west façade, and right, the rear façade.

Cottage
Constructed prior to 1943, this one-story, vernacular cottage is L-shaped in plan. The wood-frame building has
horizontal wood siding and an asphalt shingle-clad, gable roof with a cross-gable addition to the north. Another
small gable roof addition is off the rear (north) side of the structure. The raised foundation is hidden behind
vertical wood cladding. The primary window types are wood-sash, one-over-one, double-hung and fixed wood-
sash. Shutters flank all windows. An almost full-width porch with square wood supports shelters the main
entrance, which consists of a wood panel door. The entrance door is centered on the main (south) façade with a
single window to each side. The east façade has three single windows and a set of paired windows, as well as a
paneled door accessed by wood stairs and a ramp. The north façade has a window centered on the small rear
gable end addition, while a pair of fixed windows and a flush door are present on the cross-gable portion of the
building. Wood stairs access this door. A pair of fixed windows and two single-hung windows punctuate the west
façade. Notable features include the entry porch, the wood brackets at the eaves, the exposed rafter tails, the
decorative shutters, and the wide flat trim at windows. Alterations to the cottage are minimal and limited to
additions off the rear (north) side of the structure.

Figures 11 and 12. Left, the front (south) façade of the cottage; right, the east façade of the cottage.

Accessory Structures
Three small, prefabricated structures are in the north east corner of the yard around a paved parking area. These
accessory buildings were added to the site over the last five years. The single-story structures have metal-clad
hipped and flat roofs as well as vinyl horizontal siding. The western most building has a single door on the west
façade, the centrally located structure has a garage door on the southern façade, while the eastern most unit has
a mix of window and door openings on three sides. All accessory buildings are in good condition.
