DPR 523L (Rev. 1/1995)(Word 9/2013)
State of California Natural Resources Agency Primary#
DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION HRI #
Trinomial
CONTINUATION SHEET
Property Name: 493 St. John Street
*P3a. Description, Continued:

The primary window type is vinyl-sash, nine-over-nine, single-hung. Decorative shutters flank many of
the windows. A full-width entry porch with columns adorns the front (south) façade with a connecting
deck wrapping around to the west side of the structure. A modest gable roof projection supported by
round columns shelters the main entrance which consists of a paneled wood door and sidelights. The
wood railing with turned balusters at the porch is identical to the railing at the second-floor deck. Notable
features include the front porch, the enclosed eaves, the cornice returns at the eaves, the two interior
chimney stacks, and the wood railings. Alterations to the main house include window replacement,
relocation of the main entrance door, siding replacement, the installation of new railings and columns at
the front façade, and numerous additions. A detached one-story, wood-frame cottage stands northwest of
the main house. Three other detached structures are located behind the main house as well. Located
around a paved parking area these prefabricated structures serve as a gym space, storage, and a detached
garage. The overall condition of the main house, cottage and accessory structures is good.

Main House
The entrance to the house is located to the west end of the street facing façade of the main house. The
enclosed entrance takes up a small portion of the original porch and projects from the original façade of
the house. East of the entry are three windows with wide trim and a decorative crosshead. Each window is
flanked by shutters. Round columns support the overhang at the porch area. Centered on the second floor
is a wide shed roof dormer. A paired multi-lite French door provides access to the deck. A single, multi-
lite window stands to each side of the door.

Two sets of paired windows are visible on the east façade under the gable end at the first floor. North of
these windows are three additional openings – two single-hung and one slider. Two gable end dormers
punctuate the cross-gable roof at the north side of this façade. A single-hung window and a decorative
metal railing give interest to each dormer. All single-hung windows and surrounds match the windows on
the south façade.

The dominant feature of the north façade is the second floor balcony supported by round columns. The
balcony shelters the rear entrance which is slightly off center on the first floor. A single French door
accesses the balcony. The balcony railing matches the railings on the front of the building. A single-hung
window is east of the rear entry door.

A bay window, multi-lite door and single-hung window adorn the first floor of the west side of the
building. At the second floor a single gable end dormer has a pair of windows. Just north of the dormer is
a wood clad interior chimney stack. A paired French door with a multi-lite transom is located at the south
end of the first floor under the gable end. Located directly below the ridge of the gable end at the second
floor is a single-hung window. An uncovered wood deck spans most of this elevation and is connected to
the entry porch. Vertical wood siding clads the railing around the deck perimeter.

Cottage
Constructed prior to 1943, this one-story, vernacular cottage is L-shaped in plan. The wood-frame
building has horizontal wood siding and an asphalt shingle-clad, gable roof with a cross-gable addition to
the north. Another small gable roof addition is off the rear (north) side of the structure. The raised
foundation is hidden behind vertical wood cladding. The primary window types are wood-sash, one-over-
