SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL

7

c. #11 – Crossing Guards
i. Data regarding intersections covered. Streetcar count volume.
ii. Why do we have 22, how many are arterials, how many are residential
streets?
Answer:
The City’s crossing guard program began with nine crossing guards. Over time, the
City has added crossing guards up to the current 22, based on resident requests.
Each such request was vetted by the Staff Traffic Committee (a committee
comprised of staff from Traffic Engineering, Police Department, School District,
Economic Development and Streets Department).
In 2022, Traffic Engineering collected pedestrian counts at the 22 school crossing
guard locations. This data collection was used to quantify the number of students
crossing at the various types of school crossing guard locations and the number of
vehicles that pass over the crosswalks. Data relating to the various intersections
from the 2022 study (the most recent data) is shown in the table below.

Of the 22 current crossing guards, nine are located on arterial roadways, and the
remaining 13 are located on residential streets.
