I understand there will be unpopular cuts, and no
one will be happy with the loss of services and support for the place
we call home. In going over the agenda for the April 8, 2025,
Tuesday meeting, I noticed one item (number 21) about pausing the
Energy & Environment Commission, even when the Sustainability
Manager Position is already frozen and there are no new savings to
attain with this item.
As a resident who cares about the necessities of life, such as clean
water, clean air, and a habitable and healthy world for the present
and future, I find the suggestion to pause this commission
symbolically downplays the important work of the Energy &
Environment Commission and the city's leadership on this issue. Are
we trying to muffle the citizen's voice, shelf CAP 2.0, and tell our
children that this is a town that isn't concerned about environmental
stewardship or sustainability? What exactly is the message the city
is sending to its youths with the advice to pause the Energy &
Environment Commission, especially with Earth Day coming up?
The commission meets every 2 months, and I've been informed that
they have two priority items they want to pursue: the Sustainability
Newsletter and the Sustainability Award Program. With minimal or no
cost to the city, this group of passionate and talented residents
provides a steadfast voice about this issue, a voice very much
needed in this tumultuous time of anti -science and climate disaster
skepticism. M require our city to continue to be a place of forward -
thinking as much as practical -minded leadership. The two are not
mutually exclusive.
Please do not add environmental stewardship to the chopping block,
