While I
understand the need to make difficult financial decisions, these
particular cuts directly undermine our city's capacity to address
climate change and uphold climate justice—especially for our most
vulnerable residents.
Freezing the Sustainability Manager position halts the momentum of
the CAP 2.0 Implementation—our city's roadmap to building climate
resilience. This isn't just about environmental goals on paper; it's
about safeguarding our community's future. This position is
essential to coordinating adaptation strategies that protect
Pleasanton residents from worsening heat, air pollution, drought,
and other climate -related impacts. Cutting it sends the message that
we are not serious about preparing for these challenges or
supporting the long-term health and safety of our residents.
Likewise, cutting Library services is a blow to equity and community
resilience. Libraries are trusted hubs where residents—especially
low-income families, seniors, and youth—access critical resources
including cooling centers, emergency preparedness information, and
internet access.
Climate justice means ensuring that everyone—regardless of
income, neighborhood or background—has access to the tools,
information, and support they need to adapt to our changing world.
These proposed cuts move us in the opposite direction. I urge you to
reconsider and prioritize these investments that truly strengthen our
city's ability to adapt, thrive, and lead.
Thank you,
Beth McCarthy
