described their excitement about the space-themed game and enjoyed meaningful book
conversations with younger volunteers.

Participants in 2024 also suggested a few improvements for future years, such as more
training for volunteers on program logistics, offering additional individual prizes to complement
the raffle drawings, and providing clear community messaging about how and when the raffle
winners are selected. All of these suggestions have been incorporated into the planning for the
2025 Summer Reading Program.

DISCUSSION
The 2025 Summer Reading Program began on Saturday, May 31, 2025, and will run through
Sunday, August 3. This year’s theme, “Level Up at Your Library,” draws inspiration from
games, puzzles, and STEM activities, offering interactive and educational experiences
designed to engage readers of all ages.

Participants sign up for the program at the Library and track their reading using themed
gameboards, which are available in person to encourage visits to the library. The program is
open to babies, children, teens, and adults, with reading and activity tracks designed for each
age group. The program is promoted through the library’s website, newsletter, social media,
the Library and Recreation Activity Guide, and outreach to Pleasanton Unified School District
families.

Prize incentives remain a key feature of the program. The Friends of the Pleasanton Library
sponsor prizes for participants who meet their reading and activity goals. This year’s rewards
include popular items from past years, along with new prizes that reflect the “Level Up” theme.

Special events and performances, also supported in part by the Friends of the Pleasanton
Library, will take place at the library and in local parks. This summer’s highlights include the
kickoff event with Rhythm Builders, two park programs featuring Zippy, the department’s
Library and Recreation outreach vehicle, a “Level Up” Trivia Night at the Firehouse Arts
Center, Film Club for Adults, a teen graphic novel illustration workshop, and inclusive
storytimes for all ages and abilities, including baby, toddler, family, and sensory-friendly
options. Event information is available on the Library’s website, monthly calendar (Attachments
1 and 2), and through promotional flyers (Attachment 3).

The “Level Up at Your Library” theme offers a fun, accessible way for the community to explore
Library collections and activities throughout the summer. Centered on interactive learning for
all ages and abilities, the program supports the Library and Recreation Department’s mission:
“To build community through exceptional services and inclusive programming. Discover,
Connect, Belong.”

EQUITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
The Summer Reading Program promotes equity by providing free access to reading incentives
and events. The program encourages children and families from all walks of life to engage in
literacy activities and social connections during the summer months. Public library resources
and programs help level the playing field and support reading and educational opportunities for
all.
