2. Current Wildfire Hazards and Conditions
Location and Extent of the WUI
Within the City of Pleasanton, there are two WUI areas. First, there are the hillside areas on the west side of the City
below Pleasanton Ridge. These areas extend along the entire west side of the City, covering almost the entire
hillside west of Foothill Road and on to the City limits near the ridgeline. This WUI area starts just east of Foothill
Road, continuing west beyond the City limits and south of Stoneridge, down to the neighborhoods south of Bernal
Avenue. The second area is on the hillside along the City's south side, between 1-680 and State Route 84. Beginning
at Sycamore Road and extending along the City's south borderto State Route 84, this WUI area includes the hillsides
and undeveloped valleys and extends as far as Stanley Boulevard between Touringa Drive and Vineyard Avenue.
Both WUI areas contain hilly terrain and are characterized by low-density development abutting or intermixing with
large areas of continuous, unmanaged natural vegetation. However, the first area along the Pleasanton Ridge is
characterized by a steep, generally east -facing, large slope from the valley bottom to the ridgeline. In contrast, the
second area along the City's south side is characterized by numerous hills and small ridgelines. The State (CAL
FIRE) has created Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps (FHSZ) that designate and identify areas where there is a higher
wildfire hazard. The City has adopted the state's recommendations for the FHSZ boundaries within the City limits.
For this wildfire appendix, the WUI areas in the City have the same boundaries as the CAL FIRE FHSZs in the City.
Figure 1 shows the CAL FIRE Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for the City and the surrounding area. The areas
shaded or marked with diagonal lines in yellow and orange are the FHSZs and WUI areas. It is important to note
that the FHSZ classifies areas as either State Responsibility Areas (SRA) or Local Responsibility Areas (LRA). These
classifications refer to who has the primary responsibility for the suppression of wildfire. On SRA lands, the state is
responsible (e.g., CAL FIRE), and on LRA lands, the local agency is responsible (e.g., LPFD). Next, the FHSZ classifies
both the LRA and SRA areas as having Moderate, High, or Very High fire hazard severity, though no Very High fire
severity hazard areas exist in or directly around Pleasanton. For the purposes of this wildfire appendix, the specific
classifications are not important. Instead, it is more important that the State and Livermore Pleasanton Fire
Department have identified these areas as being within an FHSZ and WUI area, and as having a risk for wildfire.
APPENDIX A -WILDFIRE
8 of 219
