The town, initially known as Amador after Jose Maria Amador, was later named
Dougherty's. James Witt Dougherty of Tennessee acquired a large portion of Amador's Rancho San
Ramon and operated a hotel for stage travelers (1852)."Dougherty's Station" warranted a post office
as early as February 15, 1860 and the name was changed to "Dougherty" in 1896. "Dublin" was
reportedly used by Dougherty for the southern area of the town because of the number of Irish
settlers. The historic settlement area is located in the vicinity of Donlon Way and Dublin Way and
includes Old St. Raymond's Church, the Pioneer Cemetery, Old Murray School, Green Store, and the
Weightman Tract (formerly the site of the Green Mansion/Murray Homestead). The post office was
changed to Dublin on January 18, 1896 and discontinued on February 29, 1908. The Dublin post
office, a classified branch, was established in September 1963 [sic]. The railroad bypassed Dublin for
Pleasanton and Livermore and was responsible in Dublin's decline as a commercial center. The city
was incorporated in February 1982. It is currently a fast-developing residential and commercial
center in the Tri-Valley area.
Pleasanton
The historic center of the town of Pleasanton is approximately 4.75 miles southeast of the proposed
project. Pleasanton was surveyed in 1869 as a direct result of the arrival of the railroad. The
precursor to Pleasanton was a small settlement named Alisal or Alsal (sycamores or cottonwood)
located approximately two miles north/northeast of the project. It was founded in 1857 when Duerr
& Nusbaumer opened a store in John Kottinger's house. Kottinger, who had immigrated from Austria
in 1851, married into the Bernal family and operated a livestock ranch on a portion of the Bernal
rancho. By 1864, in addition to the general store, Alisal also had a hotel and school. The center of
town moved south to the train station when the railroad arrived. The original town plat near the
station was on land owned by Kottinger and Joshua Neal, who had also married into the Bernal
family and had been the majordomo for Robert Livermore's nearby Rancho Los Positas. Kottinger’s
plat for Pleasanton was filed on September 20, 1869. By 1876, the town of Pleasanton had a couple
of hotels, "some good stores," a post office, an express office, and grain warehouses. By the late
1870s, Pleasanton's population had grown to between 500 to 600, while Murray Township's
population was about 4,000.
Pleasanton continued to be a small farm town until the mid-20th century. The town was
incorporated in 1896, and Pleasanton Township was created in 1904 from the western section of
Murray Township. Pleasanton's population of about 1,200 in the early 20th century did not increase
significantly until after World War II. During the period before World War II, the population increased
as a greater variety of agricultural products were produced in the area. Pleasanton became an
important area for growing tomatoes, hops and sugar beets. In 1932, the packing houses in
Pleasanton shipped grapes, tomatoes, cauliflower, squash and other vegetables; hay and grains were
still important products in the area which had the only grain elevator in Alameda County. Dairying
became increasingly important by the 1920s, and a number of the largest dairies in Alameda County
were in the Pleasanton area. With a population of 3,000, Pleasanton was the smallest incorporated
city in Alameda County in 1954. The opening of Parks Air Force Base and the Livermore atomic
research laboratory during World War II began a period of growth in the Pleasanton area that
transformed it from a small agricultural town into suburban residential/office community.
