City of Pleasanton—Hidden Canyon Residences and Preserve
Cultural Resources and Tribal Cultural Resources Draft EIR

3.4-8 FirstCarbon Solutions
https://adecinnovations.sharepoint.com/sites/PublicationsSite/Shared Documents/Publications/Client (PN-JN)/2148/21480016/EIR/3 - Draft EIR/21480016 Sec03-04 Cultural-Tribal Cultural Resources.docx
the Shriner property. In contrast, only one structure is present within the Lester property that
appears to conform to the location of the single 1878 structure.
A 1949 aerial photograph shows a building within the largest Lester Parcel (APN 941-2006-2-6) north
of the seasonal drainage within Devaney Canyon and adjacent to a small knoll with oak trees. This
building appears to have been short lived and does not appear on the next available aerial
photograph taken in 1958 (e.g., Cornerstone 2014: Appendix D).
The 1961 USGS Livermore and 1980 USGS Dublin topographic quadrangle maps show “Dublin
Canyon” rather than Hayward or Haywards Pass. Two structures—one each in the Shriner and Lester
property—and unpaved road along the south side of intermittent creek within Devaney Canyon are
present.
The Creek & Watershed Map of the Pleasanton & Dublin Area shows no modification of the
intermittent creek within Devaney Canyon, nor Dublin Creek located along the north side of Dublin
Canyon Road just north of the northeast portion of the proposed project.
3.4.3 - Methodology
Archaeological Resources Assessment
Basin Research Associates (BASIN) conducted an archaeological resources assessment to determine
whether significant archaeological resources could be present at the project site. For the
assessment, BASIN obtained information from a records search of the California Historical Resources
System, NWIC. Additionally, BASIN summarized the literature and archival information as well as the
prehistoric and historic context, provided information about the NAHCs review of the Sacred Lands
Inventory and NAHC consultation, and presented the results of an archaeological field inventory.
Historic Architecture Evaluation
A Historic Architecture Evaluation Report of two houses on the project site was conducted by
Architectural Historian Ward Hill in April 2018. The two existing houses and associated structures at
11033 and 11021 Dublin Canyon Road were evaluated to determine whether these structures are
architecturally or historically significant resources. The evaluation considered the structures’
eligibility for the CRHR based on research and a field survey, including visual inspection of the
structures, research of archived documents and historic records, and consultation with local
historians.
Record Searches and Pedestrian Survey to Identify Existing Cultural Resources
Northwest Information Center
On May 3, 2023, an updated records search for the project site and a 0.5-mile radius beyond the
project site was conducted at the NWIC located at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park,
California. The current inventories of the NRHP, the CRHR, the California Historical Landmarks (CHL)
list, the CPHI list, and the BERD for the County of Alameda were also reviewed to determine the
existence of previously documented local historical resources.
