Item #5

CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION
AGENDA REPORT

April 7, 2025
Library and Recreation

TITLE: REVIEW AND DISCUSS PUBLIC ART PLAQUE AD HOC COMMITTEE
FINDINGS

SUMMARY
As part of the Civic Arts Commission’s short-term workplan for Fiscal Year (FY) 2024/25, an
Ad Hoc Public Art Plaque Committee was formed to evaluate the condition and presence of
plaques on public artworks in Pleasanton. The committee reviewed the condition and presence
of plaques across the City’s public art collection. The committee assessed 45 artworks
throughout the city and identified six artworks without plaques, five plaques in poor condition,
and six plaques that were categorized as needing improvement.

The committee has provided feedback on prioritizing plaques for unmarked artworks and
exploring cost-effective alternatives, such as ground-mounted signs with QR codes. These
efforts aim to improve public access, consistency, and engagement with the City’s public art.

RECOMMENDATION
Review and discuss Public Art Plaque Ad Hoc Committee findings.

BACKGROUND
As part of the Civic Arts Commission’s short-term workplan for FY 2024/25, an Ad Hoc Public
Art Plaque Committee was established on November 4, 2024, to review the current condition
and completeness of plaques within the City’s public art collection. Composed of Civic Arts
Commissioners Warren Lam and Janice Coleman-Knight, the committee conducted a detailed
review of existing plaques and identified artworks that lacked signage. In addition, the group
explored the potential integration of QR codes as a means of enhancing public engagement
and accessibility. The goal of this work was to support the development of a summary of
findings to be presented at a future Civic Arts Commission meeting.

Approved Civic Arts Commission Short-Term Workplan for FY 2024/25
