CULTURAL RESOURCES SURVEY REPORT
4400 Black Ave
10
brothers arrived in the Amador-Livermore Valley in 1857 and were among the first to plant a large
wheat crop – 400 acres – in the Pleasanton area (Wood 1883:464-5; Wainwright 2007:37). Black’s
purchase of Bernal’s land made him one of the largest local landowners of the time, although he
subdivided and sold much of it; by 1878 his parcel was 1,167-acres (Thompson and West). He built a
house and farm to the southwest of the project area (Figures 4, 5, 7) where he lived with his wife,
Mary (1845-1916), and their children. In addition to grain, Black also grew hops and had 35 acres of
vineyards (Wood 1883:851-2).
Figure 4: Joseph Black’s Farm 1878 (Thompson & West)
