CULTURAL RESOURCES SURVEY REPORT
4400 Black Ave
19
The main entrance is found where the two front blocks meet. It is recessed ten feet behind the walled
garden and sheltered beneath the building’s extended roof. The entrance consists of paired anodized
aluminum doors with full-length glazing, a fixed transom above these doors, and narrow, floor to
ceiling sidelights to the right and left. The overhanging roof is supported here by square wooden posts
that are trimmed at the corners by very thin vertical boards. These boards relate visually to the trim
boards found elsewhere in the building. The ground in front of the entrance is surfaced in concrete.
Numerous other windows can be found in the building. Like the sidelights at the entrance, all of these
windows run from the ground to the roofline and are narrow – two feet in width. Some of these
windows are paired, though most are single. Several steel doors can be found in secondary facades.
There is also a large roll-up vehicle door in the rear of the building.
All of the door and window openings, at the main entrance and elsewhere, are trimmed by flat, dark
brown boards. Most of the vertical boards and a few of the horizontal ones are tooled or textured,
suggesting that they may be a form of plywood instead of solid wood.
The exterior of the building appears to be unchanged since its original construction. The condition is
generally good, though horizontal board trim is loose in places, mainly at the base of the walls. The
exterior materials seem to have been inexpensive and are somewhat loosely joined at the base of the
walls and in the roof overhangs.
Figure 12: Front (north) façade
