5. Problem Statement
Clearly identify the problem/need (Problem Statement) in your local community, which is the reason for requesting grant
funds. If applicable, provide recent and high-level statistical data that directly supports the problem/need in your local
community. PLEASE DO NOT COPY AND PASTE TABLES IN FIELD - EITHER TYPE INFORMATION IN FIELD OR
ATTACH DOCUMENT.
Impaired driving continues to pose a serious threat to roadway safety in the City of Pleasanton. Despite ongoing
enforcement efforts, individuals continue to operate vehicles under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Pleasanton is intersected by major regional corridors, including Interstate 580 and Interstate 680, which generate
substantial commuter and regional traffic. These high-volume roadways, combined with evening and weekend activities,
increase the likelihood of impaired driving within the city.
In December 2025, a CHP grant-funded DUI checkpoint resulted in six DUI arrests and numerous citations for
suspended and unlicensed drivers. These results from a single operation demonstrate that impaired drivers continue to
travel on Pleasanton roadways and validate the ongoing need for high-visibility enforcement.
The department also conducts DUI saturation patrols throughout the year funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety
(OTS). While these patrols are effective in identifying impaired drivers, checkpoints provide an additional higher-
visibility deterrent and allow systematic driver screening in a controlled environment.
State and county data continue to show that impaired driving remains a leading factor in traffic collisions and injuries.
Continued grant funding is necessary to support a comprehensive plan that combines saturation patrols and DUI
checkpoints to reduce impaired driving and enhance public safety in Pleasanton.

Statistical Data/Report(s)
Statistical Data
Statistical Data (Reviewer Only)
Pleasanton Police Department
Pleasanton Police Department
Attachment 1
