17

o Conversion from a sidewalk level class IV bikeway to a shared use path may
also be considered to allow bicyclists to transition to the adjacent sidewalk
area at the corner for locations where bicyclists may encounter high volumes
of turning motor vehicle traffic.

Considerations
• Sidewalk level bike lane will not collect debris from the roadway and sweeping /
maintenance will be similar to sidewalk maintenance.
• At intersections, the raised bike lane can be lowered to street-level, or it can be
maintained at sidewalk level where bicyclists cross with pedestrians, preferably
with a bicycle signal, and where/when a raised crosswalk/crossing is provided.
• Sidewalk level bike lanes with frequent intersections and driveways may require
many transitions, which can affect constructability and comfort for users.
• Bicycle and pedestrian interactions should be managed at transit stops to ensure
safety for all users.
