33

Pedestrian Scale Lighting
Pedestrian -scale lighting illuminates sidewalks and crossings at night or low-light
conditions using light fixtures that are shorter than roadway light fixtures.

Guidance
• Pedestrian -scale lighting should be
provided at controlled and
uncontrolled intersections at crossing
approaches; along sidewalks,
especially along arterials and near
schools, parks, commercial and
recreation centers; and along Class I
facilities in urban areas that serve as a
primary active transportation facility.
• Lighting should be uniform, with
consistent light levels that avoid dark
spots, sharp contrasts, and glare to
support pedestrian visibility and
safety.
• Lighting should be installed such that
users are illuminated from the driver’s
perspective and not silhouetted.
Where crossings include a crossing
island or median, supplemental lighting may be provided.

Considerations
• Consider energy usage, environmental impacts, and impacts on residential
neighborhoods.
• Install lighting to Illuminating Engineering Society and DarkSky standards.
