45

Speed lumps
Vertical deflection treatments like speed lumps are some of the most effective treatments
for slowing motor vehicle speeds. These treatments can reduce higher-speed motor
vehicle cut-through traffic on local streets.

Guidance
• Use on local and shared streets at midblock locations where lower motor vehicle
speeds and volumes are desired, such as on bike boulevards.
• Locate speed lumps every 250 to 500 feet to accomplish speed control. Do not
locate in front of driveways, close to intersections, or on a sharp curve.
• Refer to the City of Pleasanton’s Standard Specifications & Details for Speed Lumps
and Advance Warning Markings (July 2024).
Considerations
• To minimize impacts to emergency response, consider offset speed tables, which
are split down the street centerline with longitudinal separation between the halves.
• Speed lumps may be constructed out of asphalt or rubber. The City of Pleasanton
requires the use of asphalt to minimize maintenance and installation costs that
increase with the rubber mats.
• Design should consider the ability to withstand the weight of fire apparatus and
outriggers.
