48

Radar Speed Signs
Radar speed signs, also known as dynamic speed display/feedback signs, measure the
speed of an approaching vehicle using radar, then display the speed back to the driver on
an LED sign. These speeds are meant to encourage drivers to slow down as they suggest
that speeds may be monitored/recorded. Speed feedback signs are likely to be more
effective when combined with other speed management treatments.

Guidance
• These are appropriate on most roadways with frequent speed violations, such as
school zones, areas where road design encourages speeding (such as at curves),
and other areas where drivers tend to speed or should be encouraged to slow down.
• Place speed feedback signs behind the curb or edge of roadway with 300 feet of
clear sight distance on the approach.
• Refer to MUTCD Section 2C.13 for standards and guidance related to design of
speed feedback signs and plaques (W13-20 and W13-20aP).
• Install a power source through solar panel or electrical connection.
Considerations
• Radar speed signs may be part of a targeted enforcement strategy or used as a more
passive way of encouraging drivers to slow down.
