Good wayfinding is at an appropriate
height for bicyclists and pedestrians. Signs confirm directions to nearby destinations
and typically include estimated time or distance to those destinations. Wayfinding
can also serve a branding function for Pleasanton. The City does not currently have a
comprehensive wayfinding program for bikes or pedestrians.
Recommended New Program
• WF-1: Citywide Wayfinding Program. Develop and implement a consistent
citywide wayfinding program (e.g. City of Belmont Wayfinding Program). Before
installing physical assets, establish a clear framework for selecting and mapping
destinations based on local importance to prevent sign clutter. This could include:
• Destination Mapping: Localized citywide map documenting primary, sec-
ondary, and tertiary destinations.
• Distance-Based Inclusion Rules:
• Primary Destinations (e.g., Downtown): Sign from up to 5 miles away.
• Secondary Destinations (e.g., Transit Stations): Sign from up to 2
miles away.
• Tertiary/Local Destinations (e.g., Parks, Neighborhood Libraries):
Sign from up to 1 mile away.
• Targeted Prioritization: Initial rollouts on corridors with circuitous or coun-
terintuitive bike routes, or where bicycles and motor vehicles must diverge
to approach a major asset (like a bridge or transit station).
• Standardized signage typology such as a three-part vertical sign system
utilizing standard MUTCD green backgrounds (or an approved local pal-
ette) placed at an appropriate viewing height for bicyclists and pedestri-
ans.
• Pleasanton specialized system branding directly onto (or as a supplement
to) street name signs along designated bike boulevards or shared low-
stress routes.
