RE: Tree Report for heritage trees @ 4524 and 4558 2nd SI. Pleasanton, CA
Mr, Boyce:

I am responding to your request for an inspection of three heritage trees located on adjacent properties,
The site was inspected in your presence August 30, 2006 and again September 13. 2006, The purpose
of this report is satisfy City of Pleasanton planning requirementa which includes the following:
1) evaluate the condition of all heritage trees that may be impacted by construction work.
2) Establish a valuation for each tree (Included in follow-up report)
3} Provide mitigation measures during project construction,

Summary
The black walnut (#1) is the most likely tree to be Impacted by construction, It is located within 1.5' of the
proposed exClllllllion and is already in a weak condition, However due to Its poor structure, architecture,
and vigor this tree is recommended for relTlOV8l and replacement with a healthy specimen that will
flourish for many ye&nl to come, The plum (i1l2) and black locust (#3) likely will be minimally impacted
due to their excellent condition and distance (608') from the proposed excavation, To minimize potential
construction Impacts the following mitigation meaaures should be Implemented prior to the
commencement or work:

1. Locate structunlll, grade changes, llIr:., as far as fe.'ble from the . drip line' aree Of tile tree
2, Avoid damllglng 10011I through grading, trenching, compaction, etc., at least within an area 1,5
times the 'dripline' area of trees, Whef8 root damage cannot be avoided, roots encountered
(over 1" diameter) should be exposed approximately 12" beyond the area to be disturbed
(Iowards tree stem), by hand excavation or With specialized hydreulic or pneumatic eqUipment.
Cut roots cleanly With hand prunenl or power saw, and Immediately back-fill with soil to cover.
Avoid tearing, or otherwise disturbing that portion of the root(s) to remain, If pruned roots must
remain exposed for an extended period (more than a few hOUnl), cover with an absorbent, porous
material (e,Q., untreated burlap, carpeting, cotton cloth, elc.) and keep moist until roots can be
backfilled.
3, Construct. temporary fence (Chain-link) as far from the tree stem (trunk) as pOSSible,
surrounding the tree, and 8-8 feet in height.
4, Do not allow vehicles, equipment, pedestrian traffic; building materials or debris storage, or
disposal of phytotOXic materials inside of the fenced area,
5. Avoid pruning immediately before, during or immediately after, construction Impact.
Perform only that pruning which is unavoidable dUB to conflicts with proposed development,
Aesthetic pruning should not be performed for at least 1-2 yeanl following completion of
construction ,
6, Trees that will be Impacted by construction may benefit from fertilization, ideally performed
