Commercial Activity

Total taxable transactions in 1988 in the City of Pleasanton were over 426 percent
(426%) greater than the 1979 figure. The opening of Stoneridge Shopping Center in 1981 is
largely responsible for the increased valuation of taxable sales. Stoneridge Center, a large
regional shopping center located at the intersection of Interstate Highways 580 and 680 has
three full-line department stores including Macys, Emporium, J. C. Penneys, Nordstroms
(planned to open in March 1990), and nearly 100 smaller shops, restaurants, and service
establishments. There are also a number of neighborhood shopping centers in the City. The
City's central business district is located in downtown Pleasanton in the southern portion of
the City. Table D-5 presents taxable transactions for the City from 1979 through the first
quarter of 1989. In 1988, retail transactions increased by 6.8 percent (6.8%), and total
transactions increased 16 percent (16%).

Table D-5

CITY OF PLEASANTON
TAXABLE TRANSACTIONS
(In Thousands of Dollars)

Retail Stores
No. of Taxable
Year Permits Transactions

Total all Outlets
No. of Taxable
Permits Transactions

1979 207 $ 51,923
1980 223 81,264
1981 298 124,785
1982 330 146,698
1983 356 174,001
1984 380 213,345
1985 422 239,548
1986 511 274,180
1987 642 274,180
1988 734 412,172
1989' 742 100,502

666 $ 91,045
737 123,013
834 179,925
909 193,568
993 239,754
1,071 292,229
1,205 336,812
1,328 416,032
1,328 416,031
1,599 603,487
1,602 141,516

* 1989 figures reflect 1st Quarter of 1989 only.

Source: California State Board of Equalization.
