November 3, 2006
Dear Commission Members,
Please include this letter in your formal considerations of the proposed
expansion of Trinity Lutheran Church's permanent preschool building and
enlarged parking lot on Golden Road.
I am writing this because the time allotted to address the commission at the
formal hearing is limited and I am afraid that I may not be able to include all
of my concerns regarding the traffic and aesthetic issues brought up by
Trinity's planned expansion at the meeting on November 8, 2006.
My husband and I purchased our home at 5029 Golden Road in 1975 and
have resided there since. Trinity Lutheran Church was a small church, the
pastor lived on the property and there was no preschool. Golden Road was a
very busy street and the promise of Del Valle Parkway in the General Plan
for the City of Pleasanton gave us much hope that the traffic situation would
improve. Although Del Valle Parkway was reduced from the planned four
lanes to two lanes it did alleviate the number of cars using Golden Road and
gave us a much safer street. When our children were young we could not
allow them to play in the front yard due to the traffic safety issues.
My biggest concern is the increase in traffic that may occur as a result of
Trinity's proposal to enlarge the parking area on Golden Road, replace 3500
square foot buildings with a structure that is over 8100 square feet and place
it so that there is no possibility of EVER using Del Valle Parkway as the
major entrance and exit to their facility. Del Valle Parkway is a roadway
that can better handle a heavy traffic load. There are no residential
driveways near this entrance to the facility and it provides for safe access to
Hopyard Road from where most of the vehicles using Trinity's facility
come.
The intersection at Hopyard and Golden is a very complicated intersection as
the driveway to Trinity's parking lot is across from a frontage road and next
to a crosswalk. We hear screeching brakes too many times that make us
cringe with fear. There are many elementary and high school students who
walk to and from school each day and their safety must be considered. They
also travel past our homes on skateboards and scooters crossing the
driveway to Trinity just as preschool and day care parents are rushing in and
