-~ . .
Dan Sarich HortScience, Inc.
1 Sarich Property Tree Preservation Page 1
Introduction
Dan Sarich is planning to develop the Sarich Property, located on Vineyard
Avenue in Pleasanton, California. Mr. Sarich requested that HortScience,
_
1 Inc. survey the trees growing on the site and evaluate their potential for
J preservation. This report summarizes our observations and
recommendations regarding tree condition and suitability for preservation
during development. This report provides the following information:
~ 1. A survey of trees currently growing on the site.
-.~ 2. An assessment of the impacts of constructing the proposed project
on the trees.
3. Guidelines for tree preservation during the design and
J construction phases of development.
Survey Methods
The tree survey was conducted on March 14'h, 2002. The survey
consisted of the following steps:
1. Tagging each tree with a numerically coded tag.
2. Recording its location on a site map (base map provided by
Ruggeri, Jensen & Associates, Pleasanton CA).
J 3. Identifying the tree as to species.
4. Measuring the diameter of the trunk at a point 54" above
grade.
5. Evaluating the health of the tree on a 0-5 scale, where 0 =
J dead, 1= poor and 5 =excellent condition.
6. Noting any areas of structural weakness such as decay,
cracks, poor crown conformation, history of failure, etc.
J
The results of the survey are found in the attached Tree Survey Forms.
Description of Trees
There were 226 trees surveyed on the Sarich Property, representing six
species (Table 1). The Tree Location Map in the Exhibits describes
each tree's location by tag number. Ninety-two (92) of the trees were in
the "Heritage tree" category as defined by the City of Pleasanton.
The site consisted of a residence with a large out-building and animal
pastures. The trees were part of a native woodland, with a few exotic
trees planted along roadways and near the residence. -Blue oak
dominated the site with 204 trees (94% of the population). There were
seven valley oaks (3% of the population) and three silver dollar gums
(1 %). The other three species were represented by a single tree each.
J
J
