ATTACHMENT B
RAILROAD QUIET ZONES – DESIGN ONLY
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project provides design for the creation of railroad quiet
zones along at-grade railroad crossings through downtown Pleasanton and at Castlewood
Drive. The current practice is for trains running through at-grade crossings to sound their
horns as a precautionary safety measure to warn pedestrians and vehicular traffic. In order
to provide an acceptable alternative to the use of horns, the existing at-grade crossings
would need to be upgraded to provide four gates to essentially block all potential traffic and
pedestrian movements across the respective railroad tracks. The five quiet zone locations
under consideration include: Santa Rita Road, St. Mary Street, Rose Avenue, West Angela
Street and Castlewood Drive. Total project costs and funding will be determined following
project evaluation and design
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION:
In October of 2007, the City Council directed that this project
be considered as part of the midyear review of the Capital Improvement Project Plan.
PROJECT COST ESTIMATE
ItemCostFundingSource
Design$150,000StreetsGeneral Fund CIP $150,000
CIP #:CATEGORY: RECOMMENDATION:
088020 StreetsFund in 2008-2009
SIDEWALK / ADA RAMP ASSESSMENT - CITYWIDE
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Recent standards for ADA ramps have been modified requiring
the installation of detectable warning surfaces on all ramps. Additionally, any street
resurfacing project now requires adjacent sidewalks and pathways be brought up to current
ADA standards. The City does not have an accurate inventory of the condition of existing
sidewalks and ADA ramps. Existing sidewalks become damaged through normal wear and
tear and adjacent tree roots that crack and lift sidewalks, creating potential tripping hazards.
It is therefore recommended that funding be allocated to conduct a study of our budgetary
needs to maintain the City’s sidewalk network in compliance with current ADA standards.
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION:
To provide a safe network of pedestrian sidewalks, it is
recommended that a study be funded to evaluate the City’s sidewalk system and identify the
potential yearly costs to adequately maintain the system and bring the system up to current
ADA standards.
PROJECT COST ESTIMATE
ItemCostFundingSource
Consultant Fees $100,000Street funding - Gas Tax $100,000
CIP #:CATEGORY: RECOMMENDATION:
078019 StreetsFund in FY 2008-2009
êí
