In the category of violence and safety, the community is concerned about the percentage of students reporting .
harassment at school in the last year and the number of students reporting stolen or damaged property in the
same time period. Harassment is a form of violent and abusive behavior that makes the person being harassed
feel vulnerable, isolated, and afraid. Eighteen percent (18%) ofT* graders, 32% ofg* graders, and 28% of 11'h
graders stated they had been harassed for race, ethnicity, gender, semal orientation or disability in the past 12
months. Sixteen percent (16%) of 7* grade students, 22% of 9~h grade students and 12% of 12th grade students
reported being in a fight at school in the past year. Fighting often comes before deadly violence among young
people. In the past twelve months, 24% of 7e gradel~, 51% of 9th graders, and 30% of llth graders had their
personal property stolen or damaged. Another concern is the number of studenrs that state they have felt so
sad/hopeless almost everyday for two weeks or more that they stopped doing some usual activities. Fifteen
percent (15%) of 7~ graders, 28% ofg* graders, and 36% of 1Ph graders agreed with this statement. Of the
students surveyed, 95-97% in each sun, eyed grade level stated that they answered all questions honestly.

In conclusion, the Youth Master Plan Community Input and Youth Input subcommittees gathered data on
youth support se~ices and programs currently offered in Pleasanton that support adolescence from birth to 22
years of age. Additional youth needs were identified and included youth development programs with commu-
nity leadership and volunteer opportunities, anti-drag and alcohol programs, tutoring services, art, drama,
mmic, dance, counseling, job training, mentor/role models, biking, intramural sports, recreational camps, etc.

The most f~cluent youth request was a place to hang out. The place to hang out should offer opportunities to
socialize, to receive peer counseling, to participate in organized games including: pool, ping pon& video games,
drop-in sports, special events, flmess pmgams, rock climbing, etc. A subcommittee of the Youth Master Plan
was established to look at possible ways to address these needs through Youth Activities.
