COMMUNITY OF CHARACTER GOAL: Build a community-wide effort to make Pleasanton a "Community of Gharacter.' (Gharacter is the nature of a person with the courage to care about doing the fight thing regardless of pressures and conflicts--being able to choose right over wrong, especially in complex situations). Eachindivid~l can suive to be a better p,a~on. Individual self-improvement produces a better commu- nity · nd t'ver~dy benefit& Greater awarene~ of character leads to higher standards of conduct. As people impr--o~ their conduct, they foster greater awareness of character in others. Set up a Community of Ghamcter steering commit- tee: solicit membership; meet and discuss. Provide a forum for the building of the Gommu- nity of Character. Establish a way to communicate character educa- tion information. F~cilitat~ youth education about character building through literature~ Institute systems for public recognition. IMPLEMENTATION SUGGESTIONS Possible partners may include business, civic, school, religious, parents, youth and service organizations. Establish a meeting schedule Develop a web site that is linked to PUSD and City of Pleasanton web sites. Place articles for parents on the web site. Possible partner may be Pleasanton Library to feature books for family reading on each expected behavior monthlF Solicit nominations from businesses stating "Get your business publicly recognized for supporting Commu- nity of Gharacter. ~ Highlight one expected behavior each month. Faith communities could devote a portion of their sendces to reinforcing the expected behaviors. Each participating group would recognize a member who best models the six expected behaviors. Recognition of an employee who best exemplifies the expected behavior of the month. 24
