Easter Seals Bav Area (Kaleidoscope After School Program) The Commission was provided
information about the Kaleidoscope After School Program that helps to reverse the isolation
often experienced by youth with developmental disabilities, by providing them with a safe and
nurturing environment. The program allows students to explore and build friendships, and work
on their social and interpersonal skills. Participants in the program work on coping skills that will
help them actively participate within the community. Requested funds would allow Easter Seals
to underwrite staffing costs for the Lead and Associate Teacher positions.
Commissioners were informed that participants in the program range in age from 7 to 22 and a
total of 44 students of varying ages currently participate.
Commissioner Borchers questioned why funding was needed for this program if it came under
the Easter Seals umbrella. She was provided information about the need for the program in the
community and how funding is done by Easter Seals.
Commissioners were informed that the requested funding would help pay a teacher's salary and
that approximately 32% of the program's participants are Pleasanton residents. They were also
provided details of a $45 activity fee and fundraising activities that are conducted.
Child Care Links, Melissa Spann /Shirlev McPherson (Community Service Proiect) Ms. Spann
provided the Commission with information about the services Child Care Links provides and the
funding shortfalls they are experiencing. The funding requested will allow Child Care Links to
provide professional development opportunities for early childhood education providers. Ms.
Spann also provided updated budget information. She also confirmed for Commissioners that
the agency did not provide direct childcare, but rather workshops for child care providers.
Ms. McPherson provided details of how Child Care Links funds are allocated for child care
services within the community, and how most funds go to providing subsidized childcare.
Chairperson Mastey closed the meeting for presentations at 8:02 p.m. a 10- minute break
was taken and the meeting resumed at 8:12 p.m.
After reviewing and deliberating the funding applications, members of the Commission agreed to
review each of the funding requests individually, indicate its recommended allocation for that
request, have staff determine the average of all of those allocation recommendations, and then
recommend that amount as the funding allocation for that agency for FY 2010/2011. The
recommendations agreed upon are as follows:
Valley Humane Society Keeler's Kids
Requested Funds: $3,674 Commission Recommendation: $3,079
Tri- Valley YMCA Adolescent Mental Health Services
Requested Funds: $7,500 Commission Recommendation: $7,318
Youth Commission Minutes
March 10, 2010
Page 4
