ATTACHMENT 2: PUBLIC COMMENTS
• Long-Term Proposal: Install pedestrian/bicycle path with decomposed granite jogging path.
Install intersection and trail crossing improvements.
[Prioritization score 11.30.#29 of 115]
Therefore, I've shifted my position now that I know what the majority of Pleasanton residents thought
when asked to vote. I'd still like to utilize the corridor as a safe alternative to Sunol Boulevard from
Bernal Avenue to Castlewood Drive. The PLA lease the right of way from Alameda County, so I think we
could compromise without the City of Pleasanton needing to acquire the land. Perhaps we can come up
with a compromise with the PLA.And in response to the interest in Pleasanton's heritage, I'd suggest
considering a cultural project.
Consider building an interpretive experience at the intersection of the ACTC and the south side of
Bernal Avenue describing the rich history of the Transcontinental Railroad and Pleasanton's
beginnings as a railroad town. This could be incorporated into the Gateway theme. (Of course,
Pleasanton does not have property rights but I suspect that the PLA might be open to cooperating on
this.)
Also, if the City considers adding signaling at the intersection of Bernal Avenue and Main Street, then re-
routing the Transportation Corridor bike/ped traffic through this new intersection would be an option.
Either way, expanding the sidewalk on the south side of Bernal Avenue to 10 feet, extending the
separated bike path that ends at Case Avenue would fix the gap in this network from First St./Sunol Blvd
all the way to Valley Avenue and the new trail networked planned in that area.
Minor Suggestions
The 2018 Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan takes a wholistic view of cycling and walking throughout
Pleasanton with an emphasis on connecting networks. It highlights Downtown as a priority corridor, but
other corridor projects also recommend specific components to facilitate connectivity to Downtown.
The summary of the Downtown Corridor from the plan is:
"The Downtown project enhances walking and biking routes to and within Downtown through bicycle
boulevards, sidewalk gap closures, and pedestrian crossing enhancements. This project also includes a
study to repurpose the old Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way into a shared-use path through and to
the south of Downtown."
Issues and opportunities to be addressed by the project include:
• Converting the old Southern Pacific Railroad to a "rail to trail" providing a shared-use path into
Downtown, as an alternative to the Sunol Boulevard/First Street corridor
o Conduct Trail Feasibility Study to convert old railroad right-of-way to shared-use path
[the only real conflict,in my opinion,is the vagueness of the DSP plan description for
the corridor as ending at Angela and the rest being dedicated to parking.]
• Providing an all ages and abilities alternative to Main Street for biking
o Provide bicycle boulevard treatment on Peters from Old Bernal to St.John.
[the Peters cycle track proposal in DSP is even better! Need to amend our plan for
this.]
[if the Transportation Corridor were extended from Angela to Bernal, and the Peters
cycle track were extended further into the Town Square District, then an opportunity
6
