September 16, 2021
Pleasanton Housing Commission
Agenda Item 4: Housing Element
Dear Chairperson Galvin and Housing Commissioners,
I apologize for these late comments. I just discovered that the Community Survey
was added to Item 4 and wanted to address it.
Overall, I think the survey was well done and the summary is excellent. For future
Housing Element Surveys, which I would conduct every two years or so, I would
add the following:
1. How do the responses compare with previous surveys? Write questions so
they are comparable.
2. Collect many more responses from those working but not living in
Pleasanton.
3. Add income as an identifier. It would add more information to the data.
4. When planning new or revising programs, ask questions that would lead to
applicable data.
The biggest takeaway was the acknowledgement by so many respondents to
Question 4 of the lack or affordable housing and the cost burden of living here.
This is true and the respondents know it is a challenge. The same with Question 8
about difficulty of finding affordable housing.
Please don't let the potential water shortage or school overcrowding issues divert
your commission and the City from taking on affordable housing. These issues
fluctuate and will be dealt with at the City Council level if they arise.
The Accessory Dwelling Unit questions and responses were well presented by
staff. They are a true opportunity for affordable housing. That's why I am building
mine. There is an opportunity for you to create an educational program about them.
Some have gotten bad press. Because they are permitted under state law they will
be built, and we should take advantage of their numbers for affordable housing.
I enjoyed reading the survey results until I came to Tables 6 and 7. Vertical,
colored bar charts are so difficult to understand. Please change them to tables or
horizontal bar charts. If you do use horizontal bar charts, please standardize them.
Item 4 - Provided to Housing Commission for the September 16, 2021 Meeting
AFTER PACKET DISTRIBUTION 31
PLEASANTa
'TEM
4:
PUBLIC
COMMENTS
2Odom
HOUSING ELEMENT UPDATE R a
-
..
September 16, 2021
Pleasanton Housing Commission
Agenda Item 4: Housing Element
Dear Chairperson Galvin and Housing Commissioners,
I apologize for these late comments.
