Tree Report. April 2023. HortScience | Bartlett Consulting
Merritt Property. Foothill Boulevard Holding Company. Page 4

HortScience│Bartlett Consulting ● Divisions of The F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company

Existing entry and residence areas
The Merritt site includes a residence
and numerous out-buildings (Photo 2).
These are located on the west side of
the site and are generally associated
with Foothill Road. There was a wide
mix of species in this area.

Photo 2. Looking north at entry drive.
Planted Deodar cedars in the
foreground. Valley oak #1597 in the
rear.

One hundred forty (140) trees were present in this area, both native and exotic species.
Valley oak (77 trees) and coast live oak (31) were most common. These were generally
small diameter trees. Exotic species included Deodar cedar, Italian cypress, Modesto
ash, mulberry, and blackwood acacia. Thirty-five (35) new trees were added to the
assessment including 21 valley oaks and 12 coast live oaks.

Foothill Road
The development of the Merritt site will
involve installation of improvements to
Foothill Road. One- hundred and
seven (107) trees were assessed in the
area just south of Puri Court to just
north of Muirwood Drive (Photo 3).
Access to some trees in this area was
problematic due to steep slopes and
extensive poison oak.

Photo 3. Looking north along Foothill
Road. This area was dominated by
native valley and coast live oaks.
Western sycamore #1537 is on the left.

The group was dominated by valley oak, with coast live oak, sycamore, Calif. black
walnut and Calif. buckeye also represented.

Species Present
Overall, valley oak was the most frequently occurring species with 159 trees (42% of all
trees assessed). Valley oaks were found as individual specimens as well as in groves.
Trees varied from 6-inches to 70-inches in diameter. Approximately half of all valley oaks
were 10-inches or smaller. Fourteen trees were 30-inches or greater. Notable valley
oaks included: #964 (50-inches), 1441 (70-inches), and 1597 (64-inches). Each of these
trees was in good condition.
