Tree Report. April 2023. HortScience | Bartlett Consulting
Merritt Property. Foothill Boulevard Holding Company. Page 5

HortScience│Bartlett Consulting ● Divisions of The F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company

Condition of valley oaks varied
widely. Approximately 50% of
the trees (78) were in fair
condition. Another 38% were in
either good or excellent condition
while 20 trees were poor. The
most important factor affecting
tree condition was the recent
drought as evidenced by twig
dieback and thin canopies of
foliage (Photo 4). Other factors
included poor form and structure,
and leaning and bowed stems.

Photo 4. Health of valley oaks was variable due to
effects of the drought. Some trees had recovered
better than others.

Ninety (90) coast live oaks were present, approximately 24% of all trees assessed.
Coast live oaks were most likely to be found in groves than as individual specimens.
Trees varied from 6-inches to 36-inches in diameter. About half of all coast live oaks
were 10-inches or smaller and/or had more than one stem that originated near the
ground. Notable coast live oaks were #1533 (36-inches) and 1539 (28-inches). Both
were located on the west side of Foothill Road.

Condition of coast live oaks were
mostly fair (39 trees) and good (35).
Nine trees were in poor condition while
seven were excellent. Coast live oak
is more drought tolerant than valley
oak. The primary factors affecting tree
condition were overall form and
structure.

Photo 5. Coast live oak #1628 was
20-inches in diameter and in good
condition.

Fifty-four (54) English walnuts were assessed, ranging from 6-inches to 27-inches.
These trees were concentrated along the north side of the orchard area. They were
mature in development but declining due to lack of irrigation and routine maintenance
(Photo 6). Nineteen (19) trees were dead. Another 17 trees were in poor condition and
17 were fair. Factors affecting tree condition included wounds on the lower trunk and
branches, and dieback in the crown. In many cases, sprouts from the Calif. black walnut
rootstock had developed.
