Fill slopes less than 10 feet tall may be
constructed at a 2H:1V gradient. Fill slopes that are greater than 10 feet in height should be
constructed at 3H:1V gradient.

SITE PREPARATION AND GRADING

Our general site preparation and grading recommendations are as follows:

1. Existing structures, abandoned utilities, and buried structures should be demolished and
removed from the site.

2. The surficial soil should be stripped and may be used as non-structural fill in landscaping areas.
The amount of stripping will be evaluated just before grading commences.

3. Where undocumented fill is encountered (area of southwestern knob), it should be
overexcavated to expose firm native soils or bedrock.

4. Tree root balls and all roots larger than 2 inches in diameter should be removed.
5. The area of the orchard should be overexcavated a minimum of 2 feet. The bottom of the
overexcavation should be scarified at least 12 inches, moisture conditioned and compacted.
6. Areas to receive fill outside of the orchard area should be scarified at least 12 inches, moisture
conditioned and compacted in accordance with the requirements below.
7. Engineered fill should be properly moisture conditioned and compacted in accordance with
requirements below.

a. Expansive soils (PI more than 20) should be brought to a moisture content of at least 7
percent above the optimum moisture content and compacted to between 84 and 88
percent relative compaction.

b. Soils with low expansion potential (PI of 20 or less) should be moisture conditioned to
at least 5 percent above the optimum moisture content and compacted to at least 90
percent relative compaction.

8. Relative compaction refers to the in-place dry density of soil expressed as a percentage of
the maximum dry density determined by ASTM D1557 compaction test procedure.
Optimum moisture is the water content (percentage by dry weight) corresponding to the
maximum dry density.
