match needs of residents of all ages." The PCO assembly program for elementary students
addresses the music education needs of Pleasanton's elementary school students, by
deepening the understanding of music fundamentals while at the same time, providing
supplementary resources to elementary school teachers that are not readily available in the
standard music curriculum. The educational packet of materials provided to teachers is
created to expand upon the assembly concepts and enhance classroom instruction.
Furthermore, PCO’s assembly program hopefully encourages students to play an
instrument and participate in their school music program.
Goal 1 of the Cultural Plan addresses the need for Pleasanton to "Enhance arts and
cultural programming . . . " The primary objective of Pacific Chamber Orchestra’s
educational programs are to support cultural enrichment through motivating students to
participate in their school music programs and to incorporate music into their lives and
families.
Goal 3 of the Cultural Plan calls for Pleasanton to "Celebrate cultural diversity and enhance
connections . . . including diverse racial/ethnic groups, national origin/heritage, and
age/generation." PCO’s “Discover Music” assembly program consists of a quintet
performing selected music from diverse countries, cultures, and time periods. Quintet
members also represent a broad range of ages, cultural heritages and ethnicities,
demonstrating that musicians can come from a variety of backgrounds and can still perform
at different stages in their lives.
Describe your agency and provide its mission or purpose statement.
Pacific Chamber Orchestra (PCO), now in its 34th season, is a regional professional
ensemble dedicated to sustaining and extending the rich heritage of classical music for
chamber orchestra for 8 to 40 musicians through inspiring performances and engaging
educational programs that enrich life in our local communities. PCO offers a wide range of
programming. This flexibility allows for the commission of new works and the performance
of undiscovered gems. Conductor Lawrence Kohl’s concert programs are uniquely
designed to illuminate common musical threads that bind together works being presented
and to engage the audience through fostering a deeper appreciation of the music. PCO
musicians perform with the San Francisco Symphony, Opera, Ballet and Theater orchestras
and in movie soundtracks recorded at Skywalker Ranch. PCO members tour and solo
internationally. PCO has had a Tri-Valley and, specifically, a Pleasanton presence for over
three decades. The Livermore Independent enthused, “the Pacific Chamber [Orchestra] is
indeed the best you can hear . . . a treasure beyond price.” PCO's educational program has
brought classical music to over 300,000 children through full-orchestra matinee concerts,
clinics for middle and high school music students, and introductions to musical concepts in
the elementary school assembly program.
Please describe how you plan to market this project.
In early fall the list of all the elementary principals, administrative assistants, music teachers
and PTA reps is updated. A descriptive announcement encouraging principals, music
teachers and assembly coordinators to sign-up their schools is emailed to all elementary
schools. Priority is given to schools that PCO did not visit the previous year. Follow-up
phone calls are made to be sure that the appropriate person who schedules the assemblies
for their school receives the announcement.
