Approximately 2,000 elementary school students with assemblies at four elementary
schools.
Describe the specific population your agency anticipates serving with these funds and
how they will benefit from the implementation of this project. (e.g. low income, youth,
disabled, etc.)
Pleasanton elementary school students will benefit from participating in a program created
specifically for them, which will in turn convey an important message that these students
are taken seriously as a valued audience attending a high quality orchestra concert
performance. This exposure to classical music provides an opportunity for students to
expand their musical literacy. This concert experience may also lead to sparking student
interest in playing a musical instrument, an activity that offers many advantages beyond
simply learning an instrument. Music provides cultural inclusions and enrichment for young
students promoting academic success and social skill development.
Please describe in detail what the community grant funds will be specifically used for.
The community grant funds will be used to pay for
1. Musicians, narrator and Music Director
2. Music composer/arranger.
3. Development of the educational materials.
Describe how this project is cost effective and whether the budget is reasonable for the
anticipated result. If this project does not receive funding, what will be the effect on this
project?
The cost to the City of Pleasanton is about $3.50 per child for the school assemblies, based
on 2,000 students served. Compared with the extreme time, effort and expense of
transporting students across the Bay to San Francisco, PCO’s program cost is modest.
Nevertheless, the quality of PCO's program is of the highest professional caliber. The
musicians have performed programs hundreds of times and bring over 30 years of top-
notch professional experience to these programs, which offer excitement and inspiration to
the students.
Students and teachers appreciate the in-school customized experience, the 40-45 minute
assembly length and the interactive format. The program is also time effective because it is
presented in the schools. Students do not have to miss classroom time, as they would if
they were traveling on a field trip. The assembly program also provides the tremendous
cognitive, cultural, and artistic opportunities described in questions 2. and 9.
If this project does not receive funding, we would not be able to provide this opportunity to
the students. In fact, this program is so much demand that we urge the commission to
increase funding over past levels so that we can go to more schools.
If your agency received funding from the City of Pleasanton in the past five years, please
include project name, funding level and the year funding was received (enter N/A if not
Page 80 of 116
