It is essentially no cost to the city and can still provide
significant value to our community!
In the list of proposed reductions, Item 21 refers to freezing the
Sustainability Manager position and PAUSING the Energy and
Environment Commission.
Whether or not the Council decides to freeze the Sustainability
Manager role, it would be unwise and irresponsible to stop the E&E
Commission.
The E&E Commission has been operating at practically zero cost
with meetings only once every 2 months with minimal staff time to
facilitate the meetings.
But the Commission provides valuable input to the city for reviewing
material like the Urban Forest Master Plan and the Comprehensive
Facility Upgrade Plan. The City greatly benefits from the free
consulting services from the talented members of E&E Commission
on documents like this. For example, for the —800 page Urban
Forest Master Plan, the Commission provided dozens of very specific
improvement suggestions that the authors welcomed.
Going forward, the only two priority items the Commission is
pursuing are:
1) Sustainability Newsletter. The intent is that the content of the ---bi-
monthly newsletters, which would include suggestions for citizens to
reduce their carbon footprint, would be written by volunteer
commissioners who have tremendous background in energy and
environmental issues. The city cost would be to approve the final
version of each newsletter and post a link to it on the City website.
