I am a retired library employee of the
Pleasanton Library.
I was there during its transition from an Alameda County branch
library to a magnificent City library.
I created the Paws to Read program which connected the library to
Pleasanton schools and then versions of our own program literally
went global.
I was incredibly disheartened to learn of the draconian cuts being
proposed to what was once the crown jewel of the city. I cannot
understand why it is being proposed at this time of extreme
uncertainty of resources & funding for the public due to current
federal policies.
I still remember a couple who came in with their sick baby, trying to
use our medical texts for a diagnosis because they could not afford
a doctor. V\L- were able to connect them to free medical services.
The man who came to us, was trying to learn to fix his own truck,
unable to afford auto repair.
The nuclear physicist, new to this country and dressed in a three-
piece suit, seeking job opportunities.
And the woman who had hidden the fact that she could not read
during her entire life, searching for literacy help because her own
children were now asking her for homework help.
I could go on with a thousand stories. Everyone in the library has
seen what a library means to the community.
First, there has to BE resources available... books, data bases,
librarians trained to navigate the trillion bits of information out there
down to the most useful for their patron.
This is MOST important during times when people are losing jobs,
