Adhere to the following guidelines
to further reduce root loss within the CRZ of Valley Oak
No. 581 and overall impact to trees:
• Prior to grading in the CRZ, an inspection trench shall
be dug, either by hand or Airspade1 at the furthest
extent of excavation required for excavation and
construction to expose roots critical for health and
overall tree stability. The approximate locations of
these trenches will be shown on the site map in green
on future addenda to this report and will be finalized
in-field by the Project Arborist.
• Any trenches that must remain open for over 24 hours
during the dry season from April to October shall be
covered with three layers of burlap and kept moist until
trenches are backfilled.
• The Project Arborist shall be on-site to document the
size, number, and location of roots impacted or
removed from the tree.
• Roots up to two inches in diameter may be severed
cleanly with a reciprocating saw just behind the face of
soil.
• The Project Arborist shall determine removal of roots
larger than two inches in diameter, as these roots may
be critical to overall tree health and stability.
• If roots must remain intact in this area, they shall be
cleaned, coated with three to four inches of insulating
foam sealant, such as Great Stuff Pro or equivalent, and
capped with a PVC pipe sleeve.
• Brush the roots carefully prior to foam application to
remove all loose soil and as much dust as feasible. This
will assist with bonding, to prevent the foam sleeve
the Project Arborist.

Field verification;
inclusion and submittal
of findings in future
addenda to the Arborist
Report and construction
plans.

Prior to issuance of
grading or building
permits; during
construction.

City of Pleasanton
Community
Development
Department, Planning
Division.

1 An Airspade is a specialized excavation tool that uses high-pressure air to break up and remove soil with minimal damage.
