SHC Tri-Valley East Wing Hospital Addition
Design Review Application – Project Narrative
TAYLOR DESIGN – 6370.101

4

PROJECT SUMMARY
Stanford Health Care (SHC) Tri-Valley Hospital is a medical center complex at the northwest corner of the
intersection between W. Las Positas Boulevard and Santa Rita Road in North Pleasanton, California. It is a
Planned Unit Development (PUD) – Public and Institutional District. Since its integration with Stanford Health
Care (SHC) in 2015, Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley (SHC-TV) has been growing in its role as an essential
presence in Pleasanton and the greater area.
The original PUD application for SHC Tri-Valley (formerly Valleycare Medical Center) was approved in 1986,
which allowed for phased development of an approximately 488,000 SF medical center complex. The allowable
site capacity for this site is as follows:
Allowable Site Capacity within 1986 PUD Limits
Building Existing Floor Area
(SF)
Net Change
(SF)
Future Floor Area
(SF)
5565 MOB 45,000 45,000
5575 MOB 45,000 45,000
Main Hospital + West Wing 174,000 174,000
ASSB (Lab + Pharmacy) 11,500 11,500
Central Utility Plant (CUP) 6,825 6,825
Proposed East Wing 66,000 66,000
Future Buildings / Additional
Allowable Area
139,675
TOTAL 282,325 66,000 488,000
This project's purpose is to build a new three-story, approximately 66,000 square foot hospital addition at the
east side of the existing SHC Tri-Valley Hospital located at 5555 W. Las Positas Boulevard in Pleasanton,
California.
SHC Tri-Valley has seen increased demand for emergency services since 2020. Currently, there is a deficiency of
approximately 18,000 DGSF total. Projected emergency room volumes are expected to increase by
approximately 20% within the next ten years.
To address the growing needs of the community, the first-floor level will expand the existing Emergency
Department to a total of 42 examination and treatment locations including new waiting, registration, triage,
security vestibule, ambulance parking, staff lounge with outdoor staff patio, and support spaces. Approximately
1/3 of the existing Emergency Department will also be renovated with the remainder of the Emergency
Department cosmetically refreshed.
The second-floor level will be designed as a shell space to accommodate a potential 24-bed nursing unit (Phase
2) to support future inpatient volume. The Phase 2 build-out of the shelled space will include another 31 parking
stalls in addition to the 989 parking stalls provided in the current phase. In addition to the potential nursing unit,
the second-floor level will include two Labor and Delivery rooms that will replace two existing rooms displaced
by the connection for the new hospital addition.
The existing Lab, Pharmacy and Sterile Processing Department are undersized relative to current needs and SHC
Tri-Valley intends to combine code required space with functional needs housed in the existing Ancillary
