CULTURAL RESOURCES SURVEY REPORT
4400 Black Ave
16

DESCRIPTION OF BUILT ENVIRONMENT RESOURCES
4400 Black Ave is located a short distance from downtown Pleasanton. The immediate vicinity is light
industrial in character; most nearby buildings and properties are similar to the subject building in scale,
construction date, use, and density. Amador Valley Community Park is across the street to the north.
The 2.59-acre lot measures approximately 200 feet in width (along Black Avenue) and 540 feet in
depth. The telephone company building is situated very nearly in the center of the parcel. A/HC
conducted a built environment survey of the project area on October 10, 2023.
Figure 8: Front (north) facade
SETTING
The area in front of the building (to the north) is paved in asphalt and is devoted to automobile
parking, with painted stripes delineating parking spaces and numerous small islands with small trees
affording some visual relief. The area behind the building (to the south) is also paved for parking and
vehicle maneuvering, mainly for telephone company vans. A small portion of this lot is devoted to
storage of discarded electronic equipment, bound cardboard, and other waste sorting. In recent years
a steel shelter with open sides has been erected here to protect some of these materials from the
elements. It measures about 15 feet by 36 feet. A paved driveway along the east side of the property
connects the front and rear parking areas. A strip of ground several feet wide runs along the west side
of the property adjacent to the building.
Landscaping can be found in three places. Two of them are narrow strips of ground directly in front
of the forward-most part of the building and along its east side; these are planted with low shrubs.
The third is a broad lawn that fills the angle formed by a recess in the building’s northwest corner.
One tree can be found within this lawn; and another tree, shrubs, ground ivy, and a concrete pathway
can be found at its edges.
