Bernal Community Park Synthetic Field Repairs and Infill Installation Background: Construction of the second phase of Bernal Community Park was completed in 2016. Included in the second phase of the park are synthetic grass sports fields with an area of approximately 325,000 square feet. The synthetic fields were put into service in October 2016. The fields are lighted and see substantial use year-round. Public Works staff recognized the need to improve playing conditions and to extend the useful life of the fields by replacing the goal boxes and adding a fine-textured coated rubber infill. Scope of Work Furnish all necessary labor, materials, and equipment to complete the following work: Goal Box Synthetic Grass Replacement: Remove and dispose of the existing synthetic grass within the six (6) goal boxes on all three fields (CTS Field, 4-Leaf Field, Stadium Field). Total synthetic grass turf replacement is estimated at 6,500 sq. ft. (approximately 1,100 sq. ft. per goal box). Sufficiently clean base/shock pad in preparation for new synthetic grass. Install new synthetic grass. The selected product should be the closest match to the existing synthetic grass in terms of color, density, and pile height. Edges of new synthetic grass can be trimmed to ease the transition from old to new grass. Properly adhere the new synthetic grass to the existing grass and/or goal box markings. Add infill to achieve the desired infill depth per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Infill product to be approved by the Parks Division Manager or their designee prior to installation. Infill Replenishment CTS Field, 4-Leaf Field, Stadium Field: Install a micro-sized coated rubber infill product manufactured by CushionFall Sport/Colorbiotics or an approved equal. Infill shall be uniformly broadcast over the footprint of all three soccer fields at a rate of 0.3- 0.5 lbs. per square foot or at rate determined in the field that can be accommodated by the existing turf pile height. Total infill addition area is estimated at 270,000 sq. ft. (approximately 90,000 sq. ft. per field). The area around the perimeter of the fields can be treated with leftover infill. The infill shall be swept into the existing synthetic grass using a Laymor sweeper or similar equipment, or the sweeper recommended by the installer. The direction and amount of sweeping required will be determined by the installer. Clean any staging areas or parking lots. All work to include the removal and disposal of old synthetic grass, old infill, and all packaging materials such as pallets and super-sacks.
