25

Crossing Treatment Selection Guide
The table below is intended to serve as a quick guide crossing treatment selection after a
crossing location is deemed appropriate based on engineering judgment, traffic
operations, accessibility needs, and site-specific conditions. Context-sensitive guidance
and considerations for each treatment is provided in the subsequent pages.
Certain treatments may reduce Pedestrian Level of Crossing Stress (PxLTS), particularly
those that shorten crossing distance, control traffic, or reduce vehicle speeds. This
guidance does not replace requirements in the MUTCD, PROWAG, or other adopted state
and local standards.
Crossing
Treatment
Primary
Purposes
When is it recommended to use at…

Signalized
Intersections
Stop-Controlled
Intersections
Uncontrolled
Intersections
Midblock
Crossings
Marked
crosswalks
Improves driver
awareness of
crossing
Always Always Always Always
High visibility
marked
crosswalks
Improves driver
awareness of
crossing
On HIN0F
1 and
school routes
On HIN and
school routes
On HIN and
school
routes
Always
Raised
Crossings
Increases visibility
of crossing
pedestrians
N/A Where
appropriate
Where
appropriate
Where
appropriate
Daylighting Increases visibility
of crossing
pedestrians;
Improves sight
lines for all
roadway users
Always Always Always Always
Pedestrian-
scale lighting
Increases visibility
of pedestrians
Always Always Always Always
Leading
Pedestrian
Interval (LPI)
Minimizes
vehicle/pedestrian
conflict
Intersections
on HIN or
high
pedestrian
activity areas
N/A N/A N/A
Curb
extensions
Shorten crossing
distance; slow
vehicle turning
Where
appropriate
Where
appropriate
Where
appropriate
Where
appropriate
Protected
intersection
Shorten crossing
distance; slow
vehicle turning
Where
appropriate
Where
appropriate
Where
appropriate
(e.g., at a
roundabout)
N/A

1 High-Injury Network
