Crossing
Improvements
Safe crossings are essential
components of a connected
active transportation network.
The pedestrian crossing
recommendations are intended
to improve existing PxLTS
conditions and address
locations where crossing major
roadways creates barriers for
pedestrians.
Recommendations identify
improvement strategies that
could reduce pedestrian stress
by one LTS level where feasible.
The appropriate treatment
will depend on roadway
characteristics and operational
considerations.
The recommended crossing
locations for improvements on
the Focus Network are shown
on Figure 13 and summarized in
Table 4.
Decrease crossing distance: install curb
extensions, median refuge or protected
intersection, or reduce number of lanes
Implement signal adjustments to limit turning movements during pedestrian phase: implement protected left turns, leading
pedestrian interval, or no turn on red
Reduce vehicle speed: lower posted speed limit
and/or install roundabouts/traffic circles, speed
humps, chicanes, pinchpoints, etc
Example general improvement recommendation types and potential strategies for imple-
mentation include:
